Our timber selection

Albasia

A generally light toned timber with beautifully pinkish grain figuration. Albasia is our standard timber for the majority of our products as it is economical but has excellent qualities.

It is a more lightweight timber in comparison to the rest on this list and has truly amazing shading qualities which result in dark bold colours which stand out from the natural colouring. There is a significant amount of grain variation with Albasia which is a feature we love of this timber.

Eucalypt

Eucalypt presents with excellent parallel grain figuration and tone variation from dark greyish brown to light yellows. The sap of the Eucalypt interacts well with engraving and makes for nice dark lines. Engraving can be patchy due to the sap and grain variation.

Fijian Cedar

One of the most striking timber species that we stock and one that we are frequently restocking. With the unique colouring and grain variation, Fijian Cedar works very well for display pieces around the house and is sure to add something special to any room. An excellent all-rounder, Fijian Cedar cuts, engraves and shades brilliantly, proving a dark contrast against the natural colouring.

Tasmanian Blackwood

Another local option that we tried once and fell in love with. GORGEOUSLY rich colouring of honey and golden browns with excellent grain detail Blackwood works brilliantly across all applications and is the perfect option for somebody wanting to try something a bit more special. Well suited to cutting and engraving with shading providing a bold colour variance with the natural timber.

Birch

With a very light colour and faint grain lines, Birch is the most common of timber species to be used for laser cutting due to its availability and name awareness. Cuts cleanly with caramel edges, shading on Birch tends to be on the lighter side.

Bamboo

Likely one of the most easily recognisable wood types available these days. The stringy lines and distributed knots across the face of the bamboo provide an aesthetically pleasing experience. With its dark caramel colouring achieved from the carbonisation process it goes through, bamboo is bet suited for cutting and engraving. Shading on bamboo results in high degrees of variance due to the strength and variance in the grain.

Jarrah

An icon among the native Australian timbers, this locally sourced and produced Jarrah plywood is the timber you want if you are looking to make a statement. Bold colouring ranging from dark brownish reds to earthy oranges, a piece cut from Jarrah will be a standout in any setting. Jarrah performs well across all operations of cutting, engraving and shading. Keep in mind that the shading will provide a darker finish on an already dark timber.

All of our timbers are sourced locally and even better than that, some of them are even produced right here in Melbourne by our friends at Plyco!
